The Cork Clutch

The Cork Clutch.  Environmentally friendly, fun, functional and with a little flare.   My father-in-law traveled to Portugal a few years ago and brought my daughter a bracelet made of cork rope. Cork rope is a very soft, beautiful material which comes in a variety of colors used for jewelry making.  This was indeed my Christmas Craft of 2018 (hopefully, a post on my bracelets in the future). In buying cork rope, I came across cork fabric on Etsy and thought it was so interesting.  My mom bought me a sewing machine a couple years back and over time the idea of trying to sew cork fabric grew. Cork is a renewable resource harvested from the outer bark of a cork oak tree.  A cork oak tree once planted takes about 25 years to reach the appropriate size for a harvest. … Read More »The Cork Clutch

Intimacy of Conversation -David Whyte

I am on call.  Being on call on from Friday afternoon till Monday morning in the middle of the season of respiratory illness can be a challenge.  It requires heightened patience, kindness, and efficiency.  At home, the struggle to juggle parenting and marital harmony in the face of “THE CALL WEEKEND” is real…And by the way it is 10 days before Christmas. BUT, while driving to the hospital yesterday morning to see a newborn before going into my office to see patients, in between answering patient pages, I was listening to Krista Tippett’s Podcast “ON BEING”.  Krista Tippett is a journalist, author, and inspirational leader.  Her book, Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living, was the first book on my path of learning how to BE in the world authentically.  In Podcast #789 (I know, that… Read More »Intimacy of Conversation -David Whyte

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake from Coley Cooks is AMAZING! Who does not love Salted Caramel, Ice Cream, Chocolate Ganache AND SEA SALT FLAKES! I have made this 3-4 times now. It is decadent, delicious and not as complicated as it looks. The recipe requires putting the cake “back in the freezer for 30 minutes” often:) The result is worth it! A new favorite in our house. A newbie at the Turkey Day Dessert Table… The ingredients…easy. In the recipe you can make the salted caramel, but I choose not to, and I likely was much happier for it:)… I used Oreos for the crust instead of chocolate grahams. Because, who doesn’t love Oreos? *If you use Oreos skip the sugar and salt in this picture. They are in the original… Read More »Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake

Glorious Pies!

Glorious Pies!

Glorious Pies!! My mother-in-law is the ultimate pie queen! She literally bakes at least 10 varieties of pie each Thanksgiving. There are two pies for each of the popular pie flavors. In total, she delivers to the table approximately 15 pies. All made by ONE WOMAN!! Seated at the table are 30 of my husbands closest family members. It is NUTS!…and scrumptious… Pictured above is the pie selection from 2013. I realize a tad outdated. The excitement surrounding the pies takes over and I often forget about the photo op! Rest assured, most years are at least this diverse. Starting at the top and going clockwise… APPLE PIE with homemade caramel sauce AND homemade whipped cream if it suits your fancy. These toppings, of course, are available for any of your pie selections. How many selections may you have you… Read More »Glorious Pies!

I began working as a pediatrician in 2008.   I love what I do.  Dr. Gable’s Bookshelf grew out of my enjoyment of listening to books and my long commute.  As a way to share the knowledge I have gained, I started writing book “reviews” on some of my favorite pediatric related reads.  I share these with my patients…and now, with you.  Here is the first in a series of articles I will share which I hope you will find useful and fun! We all need play! “Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul” by Dr. Stuart Brown Read the article Do You Have A Growth Mindset Today? “Mindsets for Parents- Strategies to Encourage Growth Mindsets in Kids” by Mary Cay Ricci and Margaret Lee”Mindset: The New Psychology for Success” by Carol Dweck “Mindset: The New… Read More »Let’s Play

WE ARE ALL ARTISTS

WE ARE ALL ARTISTS The majority of my life I thought art “was not my thing”… I always wanted to be an artist, I remember sitting attempting to draw a realistic portrayal of ANYTHING, but I  was always disappointed with the outcome.  Somewhere along the way, I decided you could only be an artist if you were born an artist and stopped trying.  Instead, I was good at math and science, I was a  pretty good swimmer and a hard worker.  The rest, I was not so sure about…    My mom used to sew our clothes.  She made my sister’s bridesmaid dresses.  She made me a T-shirt quilt after college from a plethora of swimming souvenirs.  She continues to sew gifts for my children.  My Dad, after his retirement, took to whittling wood  into ball point pens.  He makes… Read More »WE ARE ALL ARTISTS
