You Spin Me Right ‘Round, Baby Right ‘Round…

I was invited to Glenelg Country School, a private school in Howard County,Maryland to listen to Angela Hanscom speak about the importance of outdoor play in the lives of children.  Ms. Hanscom is a pediatric occupational therapist, a mother of three, and the founder of TimberNook, a nature-based developmental camp for children.  I consider myself someone who believes in the importance of outdoor play, and I was fairly certain I would enjoy her talk.   By the end, I was grateful for and impressed by her insight into why outdoor free play and unrestrained movement are vital for the physical, cognitive and emotional development of our children.  As a pediatrician, I have the joy of spending many hours a day with kids from birth to early adulthood.  When I listened to Angela Hanscom’s experience and read her book, it was an… Read More »You Spin Me Right ‘Round, Baby Right ‘Round…

White & Teal Cork for the win…

I am in love with the small shop where I order cork fabric located in Portugal.  The fabric is beautiful, soft, durable and the quality consistent.  The shipping is amazing considering the distance.  I recently ordered white cork and teal cork with a silver accent.  These may be my favorite yet! Made with love for two good friends. White Cork Clutch. Soft, Beautiful. The surprise fabric on the inside is always my favorite part to pick out. I love how this one turned out!! Teal cork clutch with silver accent. Sophisticated on the outside. Fun and feminine on the inside.

Do you have a growth mindset today?

Today is the first day back to school after winter break for many children.  Students, parents, and teachers are all getting themselves “back in the groove”.  Growth mindsets may need to be refreshed.  We all need reminders to embrace a challenge.  Reminders of how making mistakes helps us learn.  Reminders of how working hard leads to greater fulfillment. Trying to use a growth mindset helps me make it through obstacles on a daily basis.  I often need reminders.  I find Dr. Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset: The New Psychology for Success” and Mary Cay Ricci and Margaret Lee’s book, “Mindsets for Parents- Strategies to Encourage Growth Mindsets in Kids” to be extremely helpful. I hope you do too! read the article

Rethinking our Advent Calendar

Today we took down and put away ALL the Christmas decorations.  The holidays have officially ended in our house…. …and I will be honest, I AM BEAT!  From Thanksgiving till New Years, it is exhausting.  Every year I want to find a way to make it slower, with less stress and more joy.  I want to be able to do the things I enjoy (a.k.a the Christmas craft, make cookies with the kids, maybe sing Christmas carols? It COULD happen. I decided for this season we were not using the “treat” advent calendar, the adorable one with little doors where I needed to find 25 days worth of items for my 3 children.  That is 75 items!!! And they all needed to fit in a tiny door.  It was too much. Maybe someday I’ll go back to it but not… Read More »Rethinking our Advent Calendar

The Cork Clutch

The Cork Clutch.  Environmentally friendly, fun, functional and with a little flare.   My father-in-law traveled to Portugal a few years ago and brought my daughter a bracelet made of cork rope. Cork rope is a very soft, beautiful material which comes in a variety of colors used for jewelry making.  This was indeed my Christmas Craft of 2018 (hopefully, a post on my bracelets in the future). In buying cork rope, I came across cork fabric on Etsy and thought it was so interesting.  My mom bought me a sewing machine a couple years back and over time the idea of trying to sew cork fabric grew. Cork is a renewable resource harvested from the outer bark of a cork oak tree.  A cork oak tree once planted takes about 25 years to reach the appropriate size for a harvest. … Read More »The Cork Clutch

Intimacy of Conversation -David Whyte

I am on call.  Being on call on from Friday afternoon till Monday morning in the middle of the season of respiratory illness can be a challenge.  It requires heightened patience, kindness, and efficiency.  At home, the struggle to juggle parenting and marital harmony in the face of “THE CALL WEEKEND” is real…And by the way it is 10 days before Christmas. BUT, while driving to the hospital yesterday morning to see a newborn before going into my office to see patients, in between answering patient pages, I was listening to Krista Tippett’s Podcast “ON BEING”.  Krista Tippett is a journalist, author, and inspirational leader.  Her book, Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living, was the first book on my path of learning how to BE in the world authentically.  In Podcast #789 (I know, that… Read More »Intimacy of Conversation -David Whyte

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake

Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake from Coley Cooks is AMAZING! Who does not love Salted Caramel, Ice Cream, Chocolate Ganache AND SEA SALT FLAKES! I have made this 3-4 times now. It is decadent, delicious and not as complicated as it looks. The recipe requires putting the cake “back in the freezer for 30 minutes” often:) The result is worth it! A new favorite in our house. A newbie at the Turkey Day Dessert Table… The ingredients…easy. In the recipe you can make the salted caramel, but I choose not to, and I likely was much happier for it:)… I used Oreos for the crust instead of chocolate grahams. Because, who doesn’t love Oreos? *If you use Oreos skip the sugar and salt in this picture. They are in the original… Read More »Salted Chocolate + Caramel Ice Cream Cake
