Rethinking our Advent Calendar

Today we took down and put away ALL the Christmas decorations.  The holidays have officially ended in our house….

…and I will be honest, I AM BEAT!  From Thanksgiving till New Years, it is exhausting.  Every year I want to find a way to make it slower, with less stress and more joy.  I want to be able to do the things I enjoy (a.k.a the Christmas craft, make cookies with the kids, maybe sing Christmas carols? It COULD happen.

I decided for this season we were not using the “treat” advent calendar, the adorable one with little doors where I needed to find 25 days worth of items for my 3 children.  That is 75 items!!! And they all needed to fit in a tiny door.  It was too much. Maybe someday I’ll go back to it but not right now.  This year we used an advent calendar portraying the story of Christmas.  With little velcro angels, kings, camels and baby Jesus.  My soul rejoiced! And my kids, though they complained December 1st that the NEW calendar was SO BORING… THEY LOVED IT! The worst argument they had was when our 4 year old wanted to put a palm tree in the sky.  The 7 and 9 year olds found this unacceptable.  I’ll take it! See you later tiny doors:)

Look at this little girls smile, she loves this thing…and so do I.

Look at those tiny little boxes…NO WAY!

  1. Agree that the Nativity is a great Advent focus. Glad the kids enjoyed the new approach. Happy New Year to you all.
