I’d argue in the above picture they are!!! A few years back I wrote a review about the book, “Changing the Game” by John O’Sullivan. As a pediatrician and athlete, I believe we set our children up for success in sports and in life if the goal is fun. There is a lot of hard work involved. At times our love of sport involves sacrifice, failure and often pain. For a child playing for themselves and not their parents approval, this is done freely. I was invited to Glenelg Country School, a private school in Howard County,Maryland to listen to Angela Hanscom speak about the importance of outdoor play in the lives of children. Ms. Hanscom is a pediatric occupational therapist, a mother of three, and the founder of TimberNook, a nature-based developmental camp for children. I consider myself someone who believes in the importance of outdoor play, and I was fairly certain I would enjoy her talk. By the end, I was grateful for and impressed by her insight into why outdoor free play and unrestrained movement are vital for the physical, cognitive and emotional development of our children. White & Teal Cork for the win…
I am in love with the small shop where I order cork fabric located in Portugal. The fabric is beautiful, soft, durable and the quality consistent. The shipping is amazing considering the distance. I recently ordered white cork and teal cork with a silver accent. These may be my favorite yet! Made with love for two good friends. White Cork Clutch. Soft, Beautiful. Starting New…Great Things Await Outside Your Comfort Zone
Around the holidays a friend of mine asked if I could make her a sign for her new office. I was extremely flattered. My first Sunshine Street “Order”, a proud moment. Courtney is a licensed psychologist, treating children and adolescents suffering from anxiety disorders. In August 2019, her office exploded. Literally. Exploded. She lost everything. Do you have a growth mindset today?
Today is the first day back to school after winter break for many children. Students, parents, and teachers are all getting themselves “back in the groove”. Growth mindsets may need to be refreshed. We all need reminders to embrace a challenge. Reminders of how making mistakes helps us learn. Reminders of how working hard leads to greater fulfillment. Trying to use a growth mindset helps me make it through obstacles on a daily basis. I often need reminders. I find Dr. Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset: The New Psychology for Success” and Mary Cay Ricci and Margaret Lee’s book, “Mindsets for Parents- Strategies to Encourage Growth Mindsets in Kids” to be extremely helpful. Rethinking our Advent Calendar
Today we took down and put away ALL the Christmas decorations. The holidays have officially ended in our house…. …and I will be honest, I AM BEAT! From Thanksgiving till New Years, it is exhausting. Every year I want to find a way to make it slower, with less stress and more joy. I want to be able to do the things I enjoy (a.k.a the Christmas craft, make cookies with the kids, maybe sing Christmas carols? It COULD happen. I decided for this season we were not using the “treat” advent calendar, the adorable one with little doors where I needed to find 25 days worth of items for my 3 children. That is 75 items!!! Baby It’s Cold Outside
Tonight we celebrated a soon to arrive baby in our family. A sprinkle of sorts. A small sprinkle. Almost like a misting. Just immediate family, only girls and you needed to be a sister, mother or sister- in- law of the babies Mom or Dad to attend. My husband’s brother and his wife, Kelley, are expecting #2. Kelley’s Mom and I equally LOVE party planning. Even though it is a small gathering, she could not resist incorporating a theme. I agree, it is essential. She asked me to make the cake topper.
